It’s been 9 years since I last visited Japan. Before that, when my grandparents were still alive, I would go every few years to visit them and I even spent a month with them during high school. My grandmother took me to visit both shops and shrines. We ate ramen, hand-made udon, and as a kid, she would let me have this vivid green ice cream float made from melon soda.
This month, my husband and I are bringing our kids to Japan for their first visit. Beyond the yummy food and sights, I want them to learn and know that all of what they see is part of their family story as well. My hope is that my kids will collect all the stories and identities for themselves.
