Pre-washing & swatching yarns
We encourage you to swatch first with your yarns and wash your swatches to see how the colours will react before working on colourwork or big projects. Depending on the shade and intensity of the darker colour, we recommend that you pre-wash the skeins before using… just like you would separate your brand new dark blue jeans from your whites.
For additional help, watch Charlotte Lee's Pre-Washing Hand-Dyed Yarn tutorial and/or Pre-Washing Multiple Skeins tutorial at the SweetGeorgia Blog for helpful tips on this process.
Turquoise-based or magenta-based colourways are the most challenging to exhaust. It’s a good idea to also use "Color Catchers" in the wash to help absorb possible excess dye so that it doesn’t deposit anywhere else https://shoutitout.com/en-us/products/laundry-in-wash-solution/color-catcher-dye-trapping-sheet.
Managing variation in dye lots
When more than one skein of the same colourway is ordered, we will ensure to ship you the same dye lot. However, we dye in batches of 8’s (with some colourways only available in batches of 4), so if more than 8 (or 4) skeins are ordered, we will need to ship you two different dye lots that will be very close to each other.
Variations will naturally exist, even within the same dye lot, for hand-dyed yarns. We suggest to alternate between 2 to 3 skeins for optimal colour blending, especially when creating large sections of stockinette (such as for a sweater) where any variation may not be the desired effect.
Helpful tips for working with hand-dyed yarns
Visit our Top Tips for Working with Hand-Dyed Yarns Guide post which includes a downloadable PDF to help answer some of the common concerns makers have about working with hand-dyed yarn. Included in the guide and vlog episode, Felicia talks about common questions and offers ways of approaching or resolving each situation.

Is Superwash DK the same as Merino DK?
You may have noticed some of our yarns have recently been updated:
Superwash DK —> Merino DK
Superwash Worsted —> Merino Worsted
Please note that these new yarn bases are designed to be the same as their previous versions. Nothing about the yarn itself has changed; it is still 100% superwash merino wool. The change has mainly come that we are working with a different mill in order to have it spun in Canada.
Regarding the name change: We decided to update the name to SweetGeorgia Merino DK to align it with how we name our other yarn lines. For example: Flaxen Silk Fine, Mulberry Silk, CashSilk Lace, and BFL+Silk DK, which highlight the fibre content rather than the treatment. We wanted to put the focus on the beautiful "Merino" content rather than the "superwash" process.
Regarding the care instructions: Because the yarn is superwash treated, it is indeed "easy-care" and will not felt if machine washed. However, as with all our hand-dyed yarns, we recommend hand washing and air drying on the label to best preserve the vibrancy of the hand-dyed colours and the longevity of the garment.

Order Processing & Shipping
Expected timelines for your order
Orders are processed and prepared Monday through Friday and typically take 1–2 days, depending on order volume. Once ready to ship, expected delivery timelines are as follows:
Within Canada: Orders ship Monday–Friday. Delivery typically takes 4–6 business days after processing, with times varying based on your location.
US & International: Orders ship from our studio once weekly, or twice weekly during periods of high volume. US orders typically take 4–6 business days to arrive after clearing customs; delivery times vary based on your location. International orders vary by destination but typically take 2–4 weeks.
Tools & Equipment: Please note that many fibre arts tools, especially larger equipment such as wheels and looms, require additional processing time. These items are shipped to us from the manufacturer before we can fulfill your order. Processing times by brand are listed below:
- Ashford (available to ship to Canadian addresses only): up to 2 weeks, subject to warehouse availability
- Leclerc: 2–4 weeks
- Maurice Brassard (yarn): 2–4 weeks
- Schacht: 6–8 weeks
We appreciate your understanding as we do our best to ship everything as quickly as possible. If you need an item by a specific date, especially during the holiday season, please contact us to confirm availability and get an estimated time of arrival.

How long do backordered yarns and fibres take to dye?
If you see a yarn listed as "0" in stock or marked as "Backorder" on our website (with some exceptions for limited colourways and special items), you're welcome to place your order for the quantity you need. We're always happy to dye a fresh batch just for you!
Depending on order volume, especially during busy periods like annual promotions, it may take up to two weeks for your yarn to be dyed and ready to ship. We do our best to fulfill orders as quickly as possible, and we may even have extra inventory in our studio, meaning your yarn could ship sooner than expected.
Thank you for your patience as we ensure every order meets our high standards for quality. The wait means you'll receive beautiful, freshly dyed yarn made just for you.
What are order timelines during the holiday season?
You can find a list of suggested shipping deadline dates on our shipping policy page.
Please note that due to increased order volume during the holiday season, orders may take longer to process and ship than usual. We recommend placing your orders early to allow extra time for processing and delivery.
Orders for tools and equipment, particularly larger items such as wheels and looms, may experience extended processing times during this period as manufacturers also see higher demand. This can also be affected by manufacturers closing for the holiday season. If you're planning to gift any of these items, we strongly encourage ordering well in advance of the shipping deadlines.
If you need your order by a specific date, please contact us before placing it so we can confirm availability and provide an estimated delivery date.
We're committed to making sure every order arrives as a joyful surprise at your door, beautifully prepared and ready to inspire your next fibre arts project.
Do you offer free shipping?
Yes, we are happy to offer free shipping on select orders.
For all orders within Canada and US, free shipping is available on yarn and fibre orders greater than $175 CAD & USD (after discounts). For Canadian addresses, this also includes all Ashford products included in orders over $175 CAD (after discounts).
Please note: Free shipping is not valid on orders including any equipment (excluding Ashford products for Canadian addresses, as written above), and/or for SweetGeorgia Gift Cards. For these items, please place them on a separate order. Contact us if you have any questions about the free shipping offer for items in your order.
What is the policy for returns?
You have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return. To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it: unused, unwound with tags, and in its original packaging. The original receipt or proof of purchase is required.
US Import Tariffs & Your Order
Starting August 29, 2025, the US ended the de minimis exemption that previously allowed orders under $800 USD to ship duty-free. This means some packages shipping from SweetGeorgia Yarns to US addresses now include import duties based on where the goods were manufactured.
What this means for you:
- No surprise charges at your door. All applicable duties are prepaid at checkout, so you won't face additional charges upon delivery.
- Shipping may take slightly longer due to customs verification and documentation steps.
- We calculate tariffs at checkout using a third-party app. If you see a tariff charge on any product marked as tariff-free, email us and we'll refund any incorrect difference.
Which products are subject to tariffs?
- Yarns: CashSilk Lace, Merino Silk Lace, Mohair Silk DK, Mohair Silk Sock, Mulberry Silk 20/2, Silk Mist
- Spinning: All fibres and spinning kits except BFL+Silk and Targhee fibre
- Accessories & other brands: ChiaoGoo, COCOKNITS, GIST (Beam, Palette Scout, Sero, Ode), Knoll Merino Lambswool, LK 150 Knitting Machine, Venne 8/2, and most knitting accessories
Everything else in our shop (including most SweetGeorgia yarns) is CUSMA-compliant and ships tariff-free to the US.
Regarding the new tariffs originally scheduled to take effect August 19, 2026: We're actively working through these proposed changes. Our goal remains the same: a smooth, transparent checkout with no delivery surprises. Currently the tariff information above remains unchanged. We will update this page as soon as we know more.
Free Shipping: We've resumed free shipping to US addresses on orders of $175 USD or more. Shipping is also still included with Secret Stash Club subscriptions.
Thank you for your kind patience and continued support as we navigate these changes together.
