Spinning Fibres

The fluff that gets transformed into stuff, spinning fibre is anything that can be twisted into yarn, including: wool, silk, cashmere, yak, cotton, flax, and so much more. At SweetGeorgia, we offer spinning fibre in the form of hand-dyed wool top, where the individual fibres have been aligned to create a smooth preparation. We dye these fibres on the following fibre bases:

Corriedale

Corriedale is a dual breed sheep that originates from New Zealand. The Corriedale fleece is a medium wool with a good crimp, a soft handle, and is very easy to spin. The wool produced is approximately 25 to 30 microns with a staple length of 3 to 5 inches. Corriedale fibre is excellent for hand spinning, hand felting and many other craft uses. We often recommend Corriedale as the first fibre for new spinners because it is easy to draft and easy to spin.

Targhee

Targhee is a sheep breed that is bred from Rambouillet, Columbia, Lincoln, and Corriedale crosses and produces a wool that has 25% long wool and 75% fine wool characteristics. This wool is soft at approximately 23 to 23.5 microns. Targhee has a very elastic quality that makes a springy, bouncy, and lofty finished yarn. The fibre also has a matte and spongey appearance.

BFL+Silk

Bluefaced Leicester 75% and Tussah Silk 25% blended together for a very lustrous and luxurious top. Bluefaced Leicester wool (BFL) is one of the softest, glossiest medium-long wools (longer fibre staple length), and naturally more durable, making it a favourite spinning fibre for many. The glittery tussah silk in this blend adds to the softness and shine, making this an indulgence to spin.

Polwarth+Silk

Polwarth wool is exceptionally soft, boasting a fine fibre diameter of 22 to 25 microns. Developed in 19th-century Australia, the Polwarth breed is a cross between 75% Merino and 25% Lincoln sheep, combining the best qualities of both breeds. Polwarth wool has a longer staple length (approximately 4 to 5 1/2 inches) when compared to Merino. This unique combination of softness and length makes Polwarth wool a favourite. Polwarth+Silk is easy to draft, super soft, with a decadent shimmer from the silk.
