Yarn Sourcing

We are committed to sourcing our yarn and fibre bases from suppliers who prioritize fair labour practices and sustainable materials, ensuring that our products reflect our deeply held values of social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Beautiful things take time to make

From start to finish, our hand-dyed yarns can take several days to produce

Every one of our yarns and fibres is hand-dyed at our dye studio in Vancouver, Canada. We aim to dye our orders in a first-come, first-served basis. So once we receive your order, it is entered into our dye queue. Our production manager reviews all the yarns and colours across all the orders every day to see which items from different orders can be dyed together efficiently.

the dyeing process

Yarns are pre-washed to remove excess dust or oils from the spinning process and to make the fibres more open to receiving dye. Our skilled hand-dyers then apply dye by either hand-painting the skeins on a table or by dip-dyeing them in a large pot to produce a semi-solid colourway. Skeins that are mottled or glazed in appearance have multiple colours that are dyed in succession, like layers, each time allowing for all the dye to be absorbed into the yarn. Each layer can take up to an hour or more to process, adding to the dyeing time.

In dyeing, we have a few fundamental principles that we focus on — dye as reliably and consistently as possible, from dye lot to dye lot and from dyer to dyer. We want to provide hand-dyed yarns that makers can trust each and every time they choose our yarns.

the finishing process

Once the yarns are dyed and the colours are set, we cool the skeins to prevent felting and then rinse them to remove any excess unattached dye. Extra water and moisture is removed from the skeins and then they are hung up to dry. Depending on the humidity and temperature, this drying time can be anywhere from one to three days!

Finally, the dry yarns are twisted, labeled with dye lots, and packaged together. Each step of the process is done by hand, even tying the yarn hang tags and wrapping the labels!
